Musik ist eine Kunstgattung, der man sich kaum entziehen kann. Ob sie aktiv betrieben wird oder nur passiv im Alltag wahrgenommen wird, wie zum Beispiel im Supermarkt, in der Werbung oder auch im Film – Musik ist überall. Und das nicht ohne Grund. Rhythmisch aneinander gereihte Klänge üben einen Einfluss auf den Menschen aus, auf seine Stimmung, auf sein Verhalten und sein Wohlbefinden. Das Spielen eines Instrumentes fördert kognitive Fähigkeiten , das aktive Zuhören kann genutzt werden, um sich in gewünschte Stimmungen zu versetzen. Und auch die nur unbewusst im Hintergrund wahrgenommene Musik beeinflusst den Menschen. Somit hat sowohl das bewusste Hören von Musik als auch das unbewusste Wahrnehmen einen Einfluss auf aktuelle Emotionen und Stimmung.
Auch in Spielfilmen ist Musik ein wichtiger Bestandteil, allerdings stehen hier meist Dialog und Handlung im Vordergrund, während die Musik oft nur unbewusst wahrgenommen wird. Ungeachtet dessen oder vielleicht gerade deshalb übernimmt Filmmusik eine wichtige Rolle. Weil sie vielfach unbewusst verarbeitet und ihre Wirkung häufig nicht reflektiert wird, verleiht sie der Handlung eine gewisse Tiefe und Plastizität, ohne die der Film trist und unnahbar wirken würde.
Durch die Auswahl entsprechender Musik haben Filmemacher*innen einen unmittelbaren Einfluss auf die Rezeption und damit auf das emotionale Filmerleben. Musik ist also nicht nur schmückendes Beiwerk, sondern mitunter entscheidend für den Effekt, den Regisseur*innen bei Zuschauenden hervorrufen möchten. Der folgende Beitrag thematisiert beispielhaft, mit welchen Techniken Filmemacher*innen Musik gezielt einsetzen können, um Einfluss auf das emotionale Filmerleben der Zuschauenden zu nehmen. Zu Beginn werden die grundlegendsten Entwicklungen des Films und der Filmmusik historisch eingeordnet. Zudem werden verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz von Musik in Filmen genannt, die anhand von Beispielen erläutert werden. Abschließend wird die Wirkung von Filmmusik auf das emotionale Erleben in einem Fazit zusammengefasst.
Wie kam Musik zum Film?
Nachdem in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts die Fotografie entwickelt wurde, rückte der Fokus anschließend darauf, auch fließende Bewegungen technisch festzuhalten und reproduzieren zu können. Dies gelang als erstes den Lumière-Brüdern, die 1895 den Kinematographen entwickelten – einen Apparat, der gleichermaßen Filmkamera und Filmprojektor darstellte. Zunächst waren es nur Kurzfilme, die den Alltag oder politische Ereignisse dokumentierten. Der Anspruch an das neue Medium stieg allerdings schnell und so wurden aus kleinen dokumentarischen Aufzeichnungen Filme, die stumm eine geschlossene Geschichte erzählten.
Als schließlich 1927 der erste Tonfilm „Der Jazzsänger“ in den USA vorgestellt wurde und 1929 der Tonfilm auch erstmals in Deutschland erschien, wurden vor allem Tanz- und Musikfilme weltberühmt. Ihnen folgten Filme aus unterschiedlichen Genres, wie Komödien, Horror und Western. Der zweite Weltkrieg verursachte einen Wandel in der Filmindustrie. In Deutschland sowie auch in den USA produzierten Filmemacher*innen Geschichten mit zunehmend propagandistischen Absichten. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg erreichten Kinofilme den kommerziellen Höhepunkt ihres Erfolges, bis mit dem Fernsehen ein neuer Konkurrent auf dem Markt erschien. In den 1970er Jahren eroberten dann amerikanische Blockbuster die Filmindustrie. Seit den 1980er Jahren gab es rasante technologische Weiterentwicklungen, die auch Eingang in die Filmproduktion fanden. Dazu gehörten verbesserte Filmkameras, Bearbeitungstechniken, Special Effects und neue Speichermedien, die allesamt die Filmindustrie vorangetrieben haben. Diese Entwicklung hält bis heute an .
Musik wiederum hat schon lange vor der Entwicklung von Spielfilmen eine wichtige Rolle beim Geschichtenerzählen gespielt. Volkslieder, Balladen oder auch die musikalische Untermalung einer Geschichte waren seit jeher in vielen Kulturen eine gängige Methode, um Neuigkeiten und Geschehnisse zu verkünden. Mit der Entwicklung des Films veränderte sich nur die Art des Erzählens, aber auch hier trug Musik ihren Teil bei. Zunächst begleiteten Klavierspieler*innen die ersten Kurzfilme, um mögliche Störgeräusche, etwa des Filmprojektors, bei der Vorführung zu übertönen. Erst im weiteren Verlauf und mit steigender Popularität des Mediums Film entdeckten Filmemacher*innen, wie passende Musik die Dramaturgie des Films unterstützen konnte.
Mit der Entwicklung des Tonfilmes veränderte sich auch der Einsatz von Musik. Sie wurde nun nicht mehr live gespielt, sondern, genau wie die Dialoge, in Tonstudios vorab aufgenommen. Allerdings war Musik bis dahin noch nicht in einzelne Szenen separiert und wurde den gesamten Film über abgespielt. Ab den 1930er Jahren beschäftigten Filmstudios spezialisierte Tonkünstler, die Musik passend zu einzelnen Szenen komponierten. Als in den 1950er Jahren der Film immer stärker in Konkurrenz zum Fernsehen geriet, suchte die Filmindustrie nach einer neuen Zielgruppe und fand diese vor allem in der Jugend. An diese Veränderung wurde nun auch die Filmmusik angepasst, um die Vorlieben der Zuschauenden zu treffen. Zur weiteren kommerziellen Verwertung veröffentlichten Filmemacher*innen zusätzlich auch die Titelsongs der Filme, die man dann in Form von Schallplatten und später als CDs erwerben konnte. Mit den Blockbustern der 1970er Jahre kehrte die orchestrale Filmmusik zurück und ist bis heute fester Bestandteil der industriellen Filmproduktion geblieben .
Wirkung charakterspezifischer Melodien
Charakterspezifische Melodien werden Leitmotive genannt. Die Idee des Leitmotivs stammt ursprünglich aus der Oper und wird häufig Richard Wagner zugeschrieben. Im Film wird die Leitmotiv-Technik mit demselben Ziel wie in der Oper verwendet. In die Gesamtkomposition werden wiedererkennbare kleine Melodiefolgen, sogenannte Motive eingebaut, die eine Verknüpfung zu Personen oder Orten herstellen sollen. Diese Technik ermöglicht es Regisseur*innen, die Handlung des Films zu erweitern, da die Musik dadurch eine informative Rolle einnehmen kann, etwa indem sie die sichtbare Handlung kommentiert oder (noch) nicht Sichtbares ankündigt .
Die Zuschauenden bauen im Laufe der Geschichte eine emotionale Bindung zu den handelnden Personen auf, die durch begleitende musikalische Leitmotive bestärkt und auch hervorgerufen werden kann. Wenn einem bestimmten Charakter ein Leitmotiv zugeordnet wird, ist die Musik praktisch jedes Mal zu hören, wenn die Figur zu sehen ist oder ein Bezug zu ihr hergestellt werden soll. Sie kann also auch erklingen, wenn das Auftreten der Figur angekündigt wird oder sie innerhalb der Handlung von Bedeutung ist, ohne in der Szene direkt anwesend zu sein. Eine der bekanntesten Filmreihen mit Leitmotiv-Technik ist die „Star Wars“-Saga von George Lucas. Alle Hauptfiguren haben ihr eigenes musikalisches Motiv. Der „Imperial March“, komponiert von John Williams, ist dem Haupt-Bösewicht Darth Vader zugeordnet und ist das wohl bekannteste Leitmotiv der Filmreihe. Mit der Figur Darth Vader wird Gefahr assoziiert. Von ihm geht eine Bedrohung für die Protagonist*innen aus, mit denen die Zuschauenden sympathisieren. Wenn nun die Melodie, als typisches „Foreshadowing“, erklingt, bevor Darth Vader auftritt, löst das bei den Rezipierenden eine emotionale Reaktion aus – beispielsweise Angst um die Sympathieträger*innen oder auch Vorfreude auf eine aufregende Szene .
In der „Star Wars“- Reihe werden neben dem genannten auch noch viele weitere Leitmotive verwendet. Ebenso bieten Filme wie die Trilogie „Der Herr der Ringe“ bekannte Leitmotive, die konsequent im gesamten Handlungsverlauf vertreten sind. Es besteht jedoch auch die Gefahr der Überladung. Zu viele und zu ähnliche musikalische Motive erzielen nicht den gewünschten Wiedererkennungseffekt und gehen in der Gesamtkomposition unter .
Darstellung und Induktion von Affekten
Eine weitere Technik, Musik in Filmen einzusetzen, ist die Mood-Technik . Sie findet ihren Ursprung in der sogenannten Affektenlehre der Barockzeit. Die Affektenlehre geht auf die griechische Antike zurück und besagt, dass spezifische Emotionen wie Freude, Trauer oder Schmerz direkt durch Musik ausgedrückt werden können. Der Film bedient sich dieser Technik und setzt Musik als Vermittler von Emotionen ein. Anders als beim Leitmotiv bezeichnet diese Technik das stimmungsgemäße Einfärben einer ganzen Szene. Die Untermalung ist also nicht auf einzelne Bilder bezogen. Die Musik kann dabei eine bestimmte affektive Stimmung hervorrufen oder durch passende Melodien eine bereits bestehende Grundstimmung in einer Szene verstärken. Einen gegenteiligen Effekt ruft die Kontrastpunkttechnik hervor. Dabei steht die unterlegte Musik gezielt im Kontrast zur Szene und erzielt so einen ironisch kommentierenden Effekt .
Die eingesetzte Musik der klassischen Mood-Technik lässt sich in zwei Varianten unterteilen, in expressive und sensorische Filmmusik. Die expressive Filmmusik spiegelt den psychischen und seelischen Zustand der Protagonist*innen wider und lässt die Zuschauenden so in den Gemütszustand der Personen eintauchen und an deren Emotionen teilhaben. Die sensorische Filmmusik übermittelt das Stimmungsbild und die Atmosphäre der gesamten Szene. Die emotionale Gesamtheit steht dabei im Vordergrund und wird mit passender Musik unterlegt . Filmmusik dient hier also als emotionaler Rahmen des Dargestellten und ruft emotionale Reaktionen bei den Rezipierenden hervor.
Um durch Filmmusik gezielt Emotionen zu kommunizieren und auch auszulösen, wird häufig auf musikalische Klischees zurückgegriffen. Dur- und Moll-Tonalität sollen dabei zum Beispiel ganz gegensätzlich für Freude und Traurigkeit stehen. Tiefe Töne werden mit Bedrohung assoziiert, während hohe Klänge einerseits Glänzendes darstellen – genauso aber auch bei Dissonanzen Gefahr signalisieren. Aktuelle Forschung deutet darauf hin, dass nicht einzelne, sondern erst die Kombination bestimmter musikalischer Parameter wie etwa Tonalität, Tonhöhe und Tempo Emotionen in Musik vermitteln . Gerade bei deutungsoffenen Szenen verändert eine von Filmmusik transportierte Emotion nicht nur die Wahrnehmung von Filmhandlung und Protagonist*innen, sondern kann auch bei den Rezipierenden induziert werden .
Emotionales Erleben
Wie wird Filmmusik also eingesetzt, um das emotionale Filmerleben zu beeinflussen? Techniken wie das Leitmotiv vereinfachen es den Zuschauenden emotionale Bindungen zu Figuren des Films aufzubauen. Musik hilft dem Publikum, die handelnden Personen in Sympathieträger*innen und Negativ-Charaktere einzuordnen und somit passende Gefühle mit ihnen zu verknüpfen . Die auditive Darstellung der tiefsten emotionalen Gedanken der Figuren ermöglicht es den Zuschauenden, sich mit ihnen zu identifizieren und empathisch ganz aktiv mitzufühlen. Die Vertonung hebt das emotionale Erleben auf ein intensiveres und greifbareres Niveau, da die Bilder nicht mehr nur für sich alleine stehen, sondern der Film als ein audio-visuelles Zusammenspiel auftritt.
Dieser zusätzliche emotionale Zugang ist allerdings oftmals nicht nur auf die Protagonist*innen fokussiert, sondern inkludiert das gesamte Geschehen. Den emotionalen Rahmen, etwa, in welcher Grundstimmung der Film spielt oder ob die Szene entspannt, heiter oder bedrohlich wahrgenommen werden soll, überlassen die Filmemacher*innen damit nicht den Zuschauenden selbst. Wenn die Rezipierenden eine Szene als besonders spannend wahrnehmen sollen, vermitteln Filmemacher*innen diese Spannung sowohl durch interessantes und actionreiches Bildmaterial als auch durch spannungsaufbauende Musik. Die Musik bietet den Zuschauenden dabei eine Interpretationshilfe. Sie entfaltet eine unmittelbare Wirkung und steuert direkt das emotionale Framing des Dargestellten und auch das Erleben der Rezipierenden .
Die Filmemacher*innen wählen geeignete Techniken aus, um diese gewünschten Wirkungen zu erzielen. So können sie Bild und Musik in Einklang miteinander bringen, wodurch sich Bild und Ton gegenseitig bestärken. Sie können Musik ebenso bewusst in Gegensatz zur Bildebene setzen, um widersprüchliche Empfindungen auszulösen, oder Musik gezielt aussparen und Bilder für sich alleine stehen lassen, um die Handlung oder Dialoge in den Vordergrund zu stellen. Filmmusik bietet Filmemacher*innen somit die Möglichkeit, den Film noch einmal mit anderen Mitteln auf einer zweiten Ebene, in einer anderen Modalität zu erzählen.
Der Erfolg mancher Filmmusiken geht sogar so weit, dass ganze Konzerte nur mit der Musik bestimmter Werke losgelöst von den Filmen veranstaltet werden. So gibt es zahlreiche Orchesterkonzerte, bei denen die Musik von „Harry Potter“ oder „Herr der Ringe“ gespielt wird. Filmmusik kann also auch für sich alleine stehen, eine Geschichte erzählen und beim Publikum ein emotionales Erleben auslösen .
